WHAT
Second Floor Addition & Exterior Redesign
WHERE
Minneapolis, MN
Owners of a 1940’s one and a half story-expansion home in a popular neighborhood of south Minneapolis, Lake Calhoun area required additional space. In addition the existing spaces needed to be reorganized to allow for entertaining and including a larger space for the dining room. Due to the lot size, it was determine that any additions to the home had to happen vertically. With the exception of the new entry porch the footprint of the house remained virtually the same. The main floor originally included two bedrooms and a bath, in addition to the Living room, kitchen and a small area for dining accommodating space for two chairs.
Architect’s solution was to remove the existing wall between the living room and the existing master bedroom, move the front entry from the side of the house to middle of the house and create a new formal dining area open to the foyer and the living room. The new master suite along with additional bedroom and bath plus a study loft where part of the new second floor addition, replacing the poorly finished old attic space. The basement was also finished to provide comfortable spaces for the family room and a home theater. The exterior was designed to create a unique and contemporary architecture, with plenty of windows and character representing the owner’s individuality. This project was featured on the premier episode of the popular HGTV show of Before & After.
