Modest to Magnificent

Edina, MN

After living in this small one and a half story house for a few years, the owner realized that she needed to make some improvements in the house if she was going to stay in the neighborhood she really likes. She had a few concerns about the home, mainly lack of space and how even though the two car garage was all so close to the house, there where no direct connection in between, lacking a point of transition, such as a Mud room. The second floor, although finished, lacked the ceiling height and basic comforts such as adequate heat and space.

Initially a small mudroom addition and a full second story was part of the overall design concept. However, the new addition expanded to include a large dining area within the new kitchen. This expansion translated to additional space at the new second floor allowing a large loft area for use as a Den. The new second floor also housed the new Master suite and the laundry room.

The new exterior with its combination of Saltbox architectural style and Mediterranean vernacular provided the distinction and appeal the home deserved, while maintaining the sense of scale and style of it’s surrounding environment.
